2011 - 2012 SEASON

Charles Calello

Conductor/Arranger

In 1958, Frankie Valli walked into a nightclub in Newark, New Jersey, and was completely blown away by a band of young musicians performing live.  Already with a hit on his own, Valli knew what he was listening to was special and asked who wrote the bank’s arrangements.  He was introduced to Charles Calello, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Five decades later, Charles has recorded more Top 10 Hits than any other arranger, 15 of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards. With a discography that includes over 100 “Billboard” chart records, Calello is regarded as one of the greatest arrangers of our time.  Some of the biggest entertainers of the twentieth century, including Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond and Frankie Valli and The 4 Seasons, have relied on Calello’s musical genius.

Calello’s work with The 4 Seasons in the early sixties helped spawn a chain of hit records that catapulted the group to stardom and created a sound that is still unique today.  In 1965/66 Calello actually replaced Nick Massi and toured with The 4 Seasons, but throughout that period, he also arranged and produced several other hit records which included “The Name Game” with Shirley Ellis, “Blue Navy Blue” with Diane Renay, “A Lover’s Concerto” with The Toy and “Lightnin’ Strikes” with Lou Christie.

In late 1966, Calello was ready for a change and accepted a position with Columbia Records as a staff arranger/producer.  Two years later he left Columbia and settled comfortably into a career as an independent arranger, producer and composer. For the next 25 years, working between New York and California, Calello’s talent continued to produce Top 10 Hits and earned him international acclaim.

In 1992, re relocated to Florida and became an arranger and assistant conductor for the Florida Symphonic Pops, in Boca Raton.  On October 20, 2000, Calello was honored for his talent and artistic contribution to the music industry with an induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, as one of The 4 Seasons.

Today, Calello’s talent continues to flourish with numerous recording projects, guest appearances with the Sunshine Pops, and live concert performances of his show entitled “The Hit Man.”  He also tours with Ronnie Milsap, conducting his live symphonic concerts.  Calello’s most recent recordings include Englebert Humperdinck’s single, “Endlessly,” soon to be released in Europe, Deana Martin’s new CD, “Volare,” a European release with the brilliant singer/songwriter, Tomey Sellars, entitled “The Other Side of Love,” and Frankie Valli’s “Romancing The ‘60’s” CD.
